Port Melbourne's latest cafe takes its name from the backdrop for the inside cover of seminal band The Smiths' 1986 release The Queen is Dead. It is not named for the actual Salford Lads Club, Manchester's answer to the Scouts, which is an infinitely less cool thing to name your trendy new cafe after (that's our story and we're sticking to it).
Now that the name issue has been cleared up, the rest of SLC is much less controversial and damn good. Owner Greg Saunders' renovation has turned what was a rundown auto shop into a cafe with its own distinct charms and idiosyncrasies. Custom-built booths, communal tables and quaint knick-knacks make the spacious layout feel comfortable, while the succinct menu rounds out the impressive list of SLC's charms.
