The boys behind phenomenally successful pizza joint Pizza e Birra are taking over the neighbourhood, opening up wine bar Mille Vini just up the road. If this is Sydney's foodie mafia, they're very welcome. The name means "1000 wines" and, though the wine list might stop a little short of such impressive figures, no one's likely to hold that against them with plenty of drops from Austria to New Zealand, Italy to Chile. These carefully selected wines are meant to be enjoyed with food in true Italian style. The menu is filled with spuntini (Italian snacks), from cheese and salumi platters to entree-sized portions of lasagne or fresh gnocchi with gorgonzola sauce.

try the wild boar!
i created an account just to write a review about mille vini. it was a busy night so the servers were spread thin...wine was ok as i prefer rhone and bordeaux varietals...but the food - the wild boar, to be exact - was fantastic. we also had the gnocchi, some greens, and some sweets. i truly appreciated the no frills pairings and presentation to focus on the texture and flavor.

No need to book
Beautiful space, very cool, great buzz, soft lighting and a rustic feel with exposed brick but modern fittings. Top half view of kitchen provides atmosphere, and entertainment if you're lucky and dining late. Seamless service; attentive without getting up your nose. Awesome wine list, good noise level & temperature. Well impressed but for the squid which was overcooked. Sit at the bar, that's where it's at. Highly recommended.

Food very average
This is a good little wine bar, with an interesting wine list and buzzy atmosphere, but the kitchen needs to seriously lift its game. I dined here a year ago and it wasn't too bad, but last night's meal was incredibly disappointing - dry, flavourless duck skewers, overcooked pork loin and very mediocre prawn pasta. It's still a nice place for a drink, but I won't be eating there again unless things dramatically improve.

Funky!
Nice simple food and good choice of wine by the glass, especially the rose. Because the menu changes monthly there is always a new surprise. Wonderful atmosphere and the toilet is great! Gotta love a mirror ceiling! Been several times, however try to go with a small group of friends.

Excellent!
Great wine, lots of different snacks, and prompt service. I've visited twice already and it's a welcome addition to Surry Hills.
