Iiza

Noticed this slick and stylish star on King Street? It certainly makes a good first impression with giant floating balloon-like golden lights, earthy light brown textured walls and of course, the novelty of being the first authentic Japanese izakaya on the strip. This increasingly popular form of dining encourages an intimate social experience to be had over Japanese food, from sushi to sashimi to larger chicken, beef, seafood or vegie mains, alongside Japanese beverages such as sake and Asahi beer. At Iiza, you'll find a varied menu of affordable eats including small bites like camembert tempura, and heartier offerings like wagyu beef. Don't forget to drink up!

Flashbacks to my time in Japan!
After not being able to get a table twice on a Sat night, we left curious and decided to book in advance this time!! The interior is simple and clean, I love the sake bottles that line the walls and reminds me of my times in Japan! We had the delicately dressed sesame bean stalks and soft shell crab rolls were great, followed by the kingfish wing (side of the fish) which I had never tried before but was amazing. Apparently it takes two days to prepare and despite a few bones, was totally amazing!

The staff are very cute running around in their kimonos, yelling Japanese. Anyone who has been to Japan may feel like they have slipped back to those days again like I did!

The desserts are not very Japanese, but I had the chocolate (something) I forgot the name, it takes 15 mins to prepare as written on the menu but omg - its worth it!!! I would go back again for that alone. Thank goodness there is finally some decent and authentic Japanese in Newtown!!

Great food but not quite the Izakaya pub experience
When booking our table, I was disappointed that there was no bar to sit at and, upon arriving, Iiza looked like an ordinary Japanese eatery. There is a selection of Japanese beer and sake but it definitely is not the Izakaya pub experience we discovered whilst in Japan.

The saving grace was that the food was fantastic. Nothing pretentious just tasty casual Japanese dining.

Disappointing
It looked promising with it's lovely decor and the lovely lady dressed in a yukata/kimono to welcome you. I honestly set out to have a good night catching up with a friend.
We ordered 2 entrees and two mains that were from the cooked sections of the menu. We did not realise this would become a massive problem.
1 hour and 40 minutes passed and we ended up having to ask about our food, fed up with the 8 glasses of water substitute for a meal. Instead of attending to it immediately we saw the waiter duck in and out with other people's meals that had arrived after us. Eventually my entree was served, then my friend's main and after waiting a bit longer we decided to call it quits. Nearly two and a half hours and with an entree and main still missing there really was no point. I was extremely disappointed and can't honestly say the food was amazing though my appetite was well and truly gone. Also expect to shout conversation across a two seater because the acoustics within the restaurant are terrible and it is hard to hear yourself think - if you must go perhaps eat outside.
