Helm Bistro and Bar

One of the first things you'll notice about Helm Bar and Bistro (apart from that million dollar view of Darling Harbour), is that the meals are remarkably good value, especially for an eatery in this oft-overpriced area. Signs around the venue will advise you of Monday's "Get Schnit Faced" (a special on chicken schnitzels), all-week menu specials and the Prawntastic weekends, where you can buy a kilo of fresh prawns to wash down with a jug of beer.

But don't let the low prices put you off - while it might not be the place for a romantic dinner, there are some more gourmet gems to be found on the menu. The simple-sounding fish of the day is served surrounded by seafood bisque and topped with a crisp spring roll stuffed with scallops; spitchcock is delivered to you salted and spiced atop a couscous salad; and the specials board might offer up confit duck leg with a creamy mash and red wine jus.

It's also a great all-season venue. The waterside location does lend itself perfectly to long sunny days spent relaxing on the timber deck with a jug of Pimms, watching the boats of those a bit better off rock gently in the water. But close off the louvered roof and light the fireplaces in the dining area and you have a surprisingly cosy winter venue that still maintains that classic Sydney view.

LUnch at Helm
Had a work lunch at Helm last week - noticed that the menu has changed, much better. Awesome value for money - very impressed by the Wagyu Burger one of the best I have had and came out very quickly. The guys behind the bar are cute too...
