Hanabishi Japanese Restaurant

Watch your sushi being rolled at the sushi bar, or take a table or private room and enjoy bento boxes or banquets at this favourite lunch spot for city professionals. If you've got a hankering for sea urchin sashimi or sweet and salty glazed fish then you'll be on track here. Do yourself a favour and skip the Californian rolls, instead take whatever the helpful waiters recommend. Enjoy with a pot of Japanese tea, or a glass of sake. There's more to Japanese food than sushi.

Pretty and Tasty Food
We went here in a group of 6 for dinner and it was so much fun as we got to order a large number of dishes and try little bits from all of them. Some of the dishes we got included the salmon skin salad, the sashimi platter (which was like a piece of artwork when it came out!), the salt crusted fish, abalone...My favourite part of the dinner though was the amazing dessert platter with 9 different desserts on it!!! All of them so delicious!!!

The service was very quick and timely, the waitresses very nice and attentive and the restaurant was lovely and comfortable. Being avid foodies, we came well prepared and had booked the table, explored the online menu and I believe we had also preordered some of our dishes as we had a larger group - like the sashimi platter. We ended up paying about $60-$70 each including wine and it was well worth it!

After cancelling our reservation with Nobu, we came to Hanabishi and the experience was great! Food was absolutely amazing, well worth the $80 /person we paid.

Worth a visit
The salmon skin salad was sensational. There should be more varieties in the sushi and sashimi platter. The service is acceptable but not attentive enough (probably because it was a full house and there were only three staff serving). A pleasant evening on the whole.

Beautiful
I attended Hanabishi with three Japanese colleagues of mine back in June.
We arrived at a reasonable time and were warmly welcomed in. Drinks were offered and accepted all around.
We were offered menus in Japanese and one in English for me.
As we were keen to experience a wide variety of "tastes" we all ordered a broad selection of various dishes. I remember very clearly the Patagonian toothfish, which was amazing! So sweet, with a lovely smokey taste.
After our initial order was served and enjoyed, we ended up ordering a wider selection of dishes, all from the Japanese menu. (from what I have later gathered, the Japanese menu is a little different to the English version - I was blessed).
It’s a pity that I can’t outline dish for dish what we had. However, I would highly recommend Hanabishi to all that would be keen to try Japanese that pushes the Western understanding of Japanese cuisine.

Amazing Japanese food
We dined at Hanabishi, after reading a review in the rough guide to Melbourne last year. It was delicious, so much so that we booked two months in advance this year to repeat the experience. A feast, a meatball (complimentary), miso soup, sashimi (beautifully presented in bamboo on ice), grilled eel on rice (a favourite), and wagyu beef - it melts in your mouth. We will always visit when in Melbourne.

No Exceptions
The table was booked one week prior to the dining date as we were so looking forward to taste the degustation menu rated so highly by reviews and The Age. Upon arrival, the menu specified set menu with minimum of four people. We asked for a special request to order the top degustation menu between the two of us as we came all the way from Sydney, however, rules are rules. We have visited many Japanese restaurants within Australia and outside of Australia, and never came across a minimum number of four for set courses, all we have seen is a minimum of two. Oh well, if rules are rules, and cannot be altered, customers will walk away. It’s somewhat ridiculous when you wish to pay more than $80 per person and still left with disappointments.
