Offering tandoori food with all the ingredients in the right places, the familiar dishes of this inner-city Indian bear a distinct resemblance to the suburban variety most of us are used to but far surpass it in quality. Here, northern Indian cuisine is given the respect it deserves by people who understand the complexity of the spices and scents and know how to get the best out of the traditional tandoor oven, with dishes like the Gaylord speciality: the lamb handi diwani. The warm, cosy environment and great-value meals are enough to inspire the sort of loyalty normally reserved for the aforementioned local takeout.

Went For A Curry... Left In A Hurry
I enjoy good Indian food, so when I visited Melbourne recently my travel companion suggested checking out this cool Indian restaurant built in an old disco - complete with mirrors on the roof. It had been a few years since he had visited Gaylords, but he said from memory it was quite good.
For me the old disco mirrors sounded like a part of the appeal, so we went. It was a busy Saturday night, and from the disorganised look of the staff it seemed to show. It took several minutes for us to be seated, and when we were we found ourselves shoehorned into an area near a pillar with a rickety table and chairs. Once we were seated it then took at least another fifteen minutes for someone to take our drink orders.
For dinner we had three dishes: Chicken Korma, Beef Vindaloo, and Palak Paneer. All of the dishes were incredibly average, and the radioactive green Paneer was nearly inedible. We were expecting a lot more from such a seemingly popular restaurant, and we were sadly disappointed - the fare was well below anything we could have had at a local restaurant back home in our small town.
All up we barely ate half of our meal and left as soon as possible, between the bad food, cramped seating, and table full of annoying drunken individuals practically sitting on our laps, we got out of there as fast as possible.
We marked this place 'never to return'.

Hearty Indian food
I've been to Gaylord Indian Restaurant twice now. The service is efficient (when you can flag down a waiter) and the food comes out promptly after you have placed an order. The curries are great and warming, with delicate flavours infused with great herbs and spices - always works perfectly with a generous helping of saffron rice or naan bread.
Although not the most memorable of restaurants, definitely a great option for good and hearty Indian cuisine.

Melbourne's best Indian cuisine
This restaurant is the best place to go in Melbourne for fantastic Indian cuisine. If you think you've found somewhere better, please let me know! The curries here are amazing...subtle and delicate blends of herbs and spices. The Garlic Nan bread is intense. The service is not great admittedly, but then great service and authentic Indian food don't usually go hand in hand. Just ignore the service, keep asking for water, and enjoy the amazing Indian food!!!!

Gaylord Indian Restaurant
This excellent establishment, situated in Melbourne CBD, is totally awesome. Nobody in the entire restaurant was wearing a suit, not even me with my propensity for wearing finely tailored suits that make me look more handsome than Dorian Gray.
I was brought water immediately by using an old restaurant trick called ASKING FOR IT. The waiters were by no means impolite or snobbish, what the previous poster failed to realize is that a good portion of the staff does not have English as their first language and therefore are fairly brief with words in order to prevent confusion.
Most amusing in the previous review is the line, "but forget it if you want a nice place to relax with friends."
In conclusion Gaylord Indian Restaurant serves great Indian food with a staff that is high on efficiency and low on small talk. The prices are totally reasonable for the quantity and quality of food you get, and the food gets to you quickly.

Not worth the effort
Located in the middle of the Melbourne CBD, this establishment seems to turn up its nose if you aren't in a suit. From the 6 requests for a jug of water before one came, and the derisive tone of the waiters, you could be forgiven for thinking they were in the business of trying to get you to leave.
The food itself was quite average, and for the cost is nothing to get excited about. The decor, like the restaurant itself looks good from afar, but on a closer inspection is quite tacky.
I'm sure it's reasonable if you look like you're worth a bundle, but forget it if you want a nice place to relax with friends.
