Cafe Bocca

Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Hay Street, down leafy little Shafto Lane, is Caffe Bocca - a ritzy cafe-style restaurant offering contemporary Italian cuisine in the tranquil setting of a picturesque piazza. From the gorgeous little water fountain out front, to the Wenge-stained solid oak tables, leather banquettes and huge wall mirrors, the place smacks of European style. In fact, it boasts the largest alfresco dining area in the entire CBD, so it's hardly surprising that the place is packed during summer.

In the cooler months, you can sit under cover on the verandah, or inside where magenta walls create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Throughout the year, Cafe Bocca serves up some of the best coffee in the city, as well as generous portions of fine fare - the highlights of which include the signature linguine with fresh prawns, garlic, chilli, herbs and extra virgin olive oil, the cacciatore pizza and the shallow-fried baby calamari on a rocket and iceberg salad. To wash it all down why not try a vintage red from the new reserves list?

Cafe Bocca
We had intended going to the Japanese restaurant next door, but it was very crowded, so we chose Cafe Bocca (which was empty).

Three of our four children chose the bruschetta, the 4th child choosing a tomato-based pasta dish. My husband decided on the calamari and I chose the t-bone steak (which was announced by the waitress bringing it to the table as "meat of the day!"). The steak was described in the menu as being served with peppercorn sauce, a roast potato, and asparagus and bean salad. When it arrived at the table, the steak was virtually cold - it was served on top of a mound of very cold potato salad, and the asparagus and beans were also cold. My husband's calamari was also cold and tasted fatty. All three bruschettas were served on burnt toast.
We did complain to the waiter - to the restaurant's credit we were not charged for the bruschetta or the cold calamari.
