Babka Bakery Cafe

This cafe is located within the bakery, and offers Russian-inspired snacks and meals. You may have to queue, but the locals say it's worth it. Squeeze in for a breakfast of hot shoo-fly buns or soft, tangy cottage cheese blintzes: they've got to be tasted to be believed. Just before lunch, the pies come out of the oven and they're fantastic too. Try the lamb and apricot pie or the spinach, cheese and pine nut version.

Love it ...
Disappointing to see some bad reviews but get it in context. This is NOT a place to go for poached eggs on toast. This is a unique establishment with a proud Russian heritage. Try the unique Russian fare. Even the basic Georgian baked beans are to die for. The blintz, the borscht are really all wonderful.
The bakery side also excels. The breads are wonderful and they make the very best Hot Cross buns in Melbourne. Worth queueing for.
Give it a go.....

one last chance
Have loved Babka in the past so although last two dining experiences were not the best I gave it one last chance for my birthday. The food was mediocre but maybe its because so many great places for brekky now in Melbourne to compare it to.The waitress was far more sour than the sourdough.Shocking service!I was so embarassed taking my friends there.NEVER EVER AGAIN!!!!!

Bad Recommendation
My partner and I went to thi splace as a recommendation, We ordered breakfast, I had French toast with was good but my partner ordered poached eggs on toast with a side of bacon, when the order arrived his toast were these small tiny round circles of bread which was rock hard and cold, 2 poached eggs also cold and rubbery and the side of bacon was this tiny slither not big enough to feed an ant. It was digusting. we sent it back and complained and sked them not to bother trying to get another. When I went to pay the person tried to charge me for the toast and bacon. How Rude. We will never go back there again. Very expensive with bad service.

Yummy bread, terrible service
All the food there is great. Which is just as well because the service is painfully slow, inattentive and so lacking in friendliness, it's borderline rudeness. So do try the yummy food (love the corned beef sandwich and escargot), but don't hold your breath for a smile and make sure you've got plenty of time on the parking meter.

Great place to get your bread
Probably the best bread and pastries in Melbourne and yes, hot cross buns.
