Agave

Whoever opined that good Mexican food was desperately hard to come by in Sydney may at this very moment be eating their words - or perhaps enjoying a delicious Mexican meal at Agave Restaurant Mexicano.

There's plenty to enjoy about this newcomer to Sydney's Crown Street. Dishes on offer range from an interesting take on empanadas - Agave's are stuffed with spicy seafood as opposed to more traditional fillings such as beef and beans - to a main of pork shoulder blade with cactus, cooked in tomatillo salsa and served on a bed of potato and spinach.

great night
i had my birthday party at agave on sat night, they were happy to seat 24 of us and we had a set menu i had chosen prior to the night. i have to say they coped so well with our group as well as a restaurant full of other patrons, nothing was a problem for them, and the food was wonderful. the owner even came and spent time with us explaining the different tequilas and how to drink them properly.... a wonderful night thanks agave.

Turn around and walk away
I really wanted to love you Agave, I really did. I love Mexican and yes, there is a major lack of good mexican in Sydney and I was hoping that you were going to change things for me.
It's not often I walk out of a restaurant seething with a feeling of being utterly ripped off and robbed.. Do you know the feeling? The feeling when you really want to either punch a punching bag or maybe even just say how you really feel about something but your usual airs and graces stop you.
The flavour of the food itself wasn't bad.. had I only paid half of what I did maybe I wouldn't have had such a bad experience. But I'm sorry.. for a $28 main you really want to walk out feeling like you didn't order off the kids menu! Particularly since we had also had entrees! And I'm not a huge eater! With your dish comes 2 tortillas... you want another one? Well you probably won't need it anyway because all you get will fit into two.
To add to the feeling of disappointment.. Our dishes specifically said on the menu that they were served with Salsa (which is normally an added side for an added price if it doesn't come with your meal) and the chef 'forgot' to send ours out. When we brought this up with the waitress all we got was a 'sorry'... still charged me the full price and didn't perhaps offer one of the other sides I had ordered on the house.
One more gripe before I call this review quits.. Oh my god it was SO HOT in there, we were melting... yeah maybe the heat added to the atmosphere like making you feel you were at the equator in a mexican taco stand or something but puh-lease! If I have to use my serviette to wipe the sweat from my upper lip instead of the salsa I never received.... well.
So yet I say again, I'm sorry Agave I really wanted to love you but I'm afraid I will never be back and I will never recommend you.

good food
I have been to this restaurant a number of occasions and never had a dud meal, I am sad the last reviewer felt their food was bad. I have always found the staff super friendly, service good, no hovering, and food excellent. I have spent time in the states trying various versions of Mexican food and pleased to note, Agave's, lack of lots of unauthentic sour cream and cheese, which seems to be the norm in lesser authentic places..My only comment was the food may not have been hot enough in some cases.. Being a chef, and a Mexican food lover, I would thoroughly recommend this to anyone..
Their breakfasts are delicious..

Not your average mexican but something very special..
I had heard rave reviews about this place and after reading the one review I could find on the internet I was a little worried.

I shouldn't have been though as I went expecting regular mexican food (which I love by the way) but instead got the most unique and great tasting meal I have had in a long time.

I would recommend trying this place if you consider yourself a foodie. It's great quality and good value for money (we paid just under $80 for 2 of us, 2 courses with wine).

I recommend the chicken breast on the bone cooked with mexican spices & cocoa with green rice and for desert the corn cake on strawberry sauce.

Overall food and service was terrible
The worst experience I have ever had in a restaurant in a very very long time.

Firstly when we arrived we were ushered to a table rigth in front of the kitchen. With many 4 seater tables available we asked politely to be move. We were told this was not possible because all the other 4 seaters were reserved. We also had reserved, but they bluntly sand rudely refused to switch tables.

This was the beginning of a disasterous night. Whilst we sat reviewing the menu, we had waitresses hovering over us presuring the order.

The the food. I have eaten better food on the side walks of Mexico City. The Pork dish marked as mild came out in a green Chilli sauce that could have burnt through an 4 foot iron plate.

The dish had about 3 2cm pieces of pork and potatoes. The rest was onion and chilli sauce.

The Magaritas were likewise pathetic. Coming out filled with ice, bitter to the extreme, so much so that the tequila was not even noticable.

Worst of all the Magarita came with straws which really defeats the purpose of the salt rimmed glass.

To top of the night we were logged with a bill of $200 for mexican which included 4 mains and 2 magaritas.

Never again. Stay far away from this place.
