Longrain

It'd be enough to come here simply for Martin Boetz's gorgeous modern Thai food, which is among Australia's best, but the sleekly designed, converted warehouse ups the ante even further. Longrain continues to remain popular with inner-city hipsters, who return for dishes like the divinely crisp caramelised pork hock with chilli vinegar, or betel leaves lovingly topped with smoked trout, chilli, galangal and trout roe. It's often chockers as the weekend approaches and no reservations are taken at dinnertime, but it's easy to enjoy a muddled drink or a well-chosen glass of wine at the elegant lounge bar while waiting for a spot at the communal dining tables.

Birthday treat
Took an out of town friend here for a significant birthday celebration - she'd heard rave reviews about the food, and certainly wasn't disappointed on that score. The service was mixed (some staff fabulous, some not), and although some people probably like the communal idea of the long table, I suspect for some punters it brings back boarding school flashbacks. Until the food arrives. Then you're transported to flavour central. GJ

Worth the wait
I went here with a friend who's a regular and completely loved it! We arrived around 8pm and had an hour wait, but hung out at the bar just soaking up the atmosphere. The restaurant is in a beautiful space and the cocktail list is, I think, the best in Australia.

Our food arrived quickly and was fresh, innovative and delicious. We tried the cuttlefish and kingfish with watermelon and chilli salad. Both were tasty, but the kingfish was the standout.

Considering the vibe and the crowd, I found Longrain unpretentious and relaxed and will definitely visit again.

One of Sydney's best
This restaurant is true Sydney. A modern, stylish room; hybrid cuisine; and beautiful people to match.

Though Longrain is far from pretentious. The staff are friendly and hospitable. The bar is fantastic and the cocktails are some of the best in Sydney (take some extra cash for this purpose - on a busy night you may have to wait a while for your seats).

The food is fresh, vibrant and colourful. You may be seated on bar stools which can be quite uncomfortable, or on the communal tables, which are quite wide and difficulte to hear guests on the other side of the table, especially since this room is full of hard surfaces creating quite a bit of noise bouncing around.

A Sydney must. Don't live here without it, don't leave here either.

Outstanding spicy treat
My special birthday treat dinner with Sydneysiders was relished.

We waited no more than 15 minutes, which made the evening fantastic, but I would be happy to wait longer if there was something to nibble on with cocktails.

The food was sublime - nothing like that in my home of Perth... yet.

From the soft-shelled crab and egg net to the hock and various side-dips/palate refreshers, this was food to rave about - for a long time.

Funky, Great Food, Great Place to Catch up with Friends..
Went to Longrain with a group of friends and it was enjoyed by all. The food, service and atmosphere was just perfect and the mocktails were lovely! Desserts were absolutely divine! This place doesn't take bookings so make sure you turn up early otherwise the wait might be over an hour!

I think it is fair enough that this restaurant has a no-bookings policy, because the food is delicious, however if you do this, I think it is really important that the front-of-house staff are in control.

We were told it was a wait of 1 hour 15 minutes. 2.5 hours later we were were seated, after numerous requests about how much longer it would be, and assurances it was another "5 minutes". Once seated, the waitstaff seemed as annoyed as we were.

The maitre d' was non-plussed and not in control. There was no apology.
